Kerala has a long homestay tradition and guests arrive expecting warmth, local food and a sense of place. Kochi, with Fort Kochi's heritage lanes, is both a business city and a cultural base. Munnar's tea hills draw honeymooners and families, Alappuzha is synonymous with backwaters and houseboats, Varkala's cliffs attract younger travellers and foreigners, and Wayanad offers forests, plantations and cool weather.

Seasons and expectations

The dry season from the end of the monsoon through early spring is the main period for both domestic and international travellers. The south-west monsoon slows most coastal areas, though it has its own audience for Ayurveda stays and green landscapes. Visitors often move around the state, so shorter stays at several places are common. Traditional houses with sloping tiled roofs, plantation bungalows and family homes with guest rooms are typical, and guests often ask for home-cooked Kerala meals, help booking a houseboat or advice on local ferries and trains.

Rules to know

Kerala's Department of Tourism runs a homestay classification scheme. According to its published guidelines, classification is given only to units where the owner, with their family, physically resides. A maximum of six rooms can be offered to tourists, and a classification is valid for three years before reclassification.

The scheme is therefore designed for hosts who live in the house. For an unoccupied villa or apartment run by a manager, the homestay classification is not the right route, and owners should confirm with the Department of Tourism or their local body which category or licence applies before listing.
