Our advice for Rishikesh

Rishikesh draws people for reasons that go beyond sightseeing. Yoga teacher training, meditation, the Ganga aarti and white-water rafting all bring guests who stay longer than in a typical hill-town weekend, and that changes how a rental should be set up.

Choosing your side of the river

Tapovan and the area above Laxman Jhula concentrate yoga schools, cafés and international visitors; month-long stays are common. Ram Jhula and Swarg Ashram sit close to the ashrams and ghats and attract spiritual travellers and pilgrim families. Further out, towards Shivpuri and the Badrinath road, the draw is rafting, camping and riverside calm, with more reliance on the car.

Who you will host

• Yoga and retreat guests from India and abroad, often for two to six weeks.
• Rafting and adventure groups, typically young and on weekends.
• Families from Delhi NCR on short breaks, and pilgrims heading to or from the Char Dham route.

Reading the seasons

Autumn and spring are the sweet spot. The International Yoga Festival in March and the winter months keep retreat demand steady. Summer is busy with domestic tourists. During the monsoon, rafting is generally suspended, rivers swell and landslides can disrupt the roads into the hills, so expect cancellations and communicate early with booked guests.

What to get right in the property

For long stays, a proper kitchen or kitchenette, a washing machine and a quiet corner for practice make a real difference. Wi-Fi with a backup connection is essential for workation guests, and a power backup helps during outages. Water heating matters in winter mornings. Parking is scarce near the jhulas, so say clearly whether guests can bring a car.

Local norms and paperwork

Rishikesh is a pilgrimage town and meat and alcohol are restricted in many areas; align your house rules with that. Uttarakhand runs a state homestay scheme, and registration conditions should be checked with the Uttarakhand tourism department before you start. Foreign guests are reported through Form C (now called Form III), which we manage.
