Our advice for Cherai

Cherai Beach lies on Vypin island, north of Kochi. Its particular feature is that the sea sits on one side of a narrow strip of land and the backwaters on the other, so a guest can see both within a short walk. It is quieter than the city and close enough to Cochin International Airport to be a first or last stop in Kerala.

Guests and lengths of stay

Weekenders from Kochi and nearby districts come for a night or two by the sea. International travellers add a few days at the beginning or end of a Kerala tour. In the cooler months, some foreign guests stay longer, working remotely or simply resting. Each group needs a slightly different listing: short stays sell the beach, longer ones sell comfort and a solid internet connection.

Property and equipment

Season

The months after the rains until the start of summer are the core season. During the southwest monsoon the sea turns rough and swimming becomes unsafe; demand falls, and the salty, humid air attacks metal fittings, electronics and paint. Budget for maintenance at the end of each monsoon.

Prudence

Tell guests plainly about sea conditions and discourage swimming when lifeguards or locals advise against it. A beach house is only as good as its safety briefing.

Coastal plots also come under coastal regulation zone rules, which can limit construction or extensions close to the shoreline. Check with the panchayat before any work.

Finally, Kerala's homestay classification applies only where the owner and family actually live on the property. For a beach cottage you do not occupy, confirm the correct licence with the Department of Tourism and the panchayat, and file Form C for foreign guests.

Our summary: Cherai works best as an easy, well-equipped beach base for travellers passing through Kochi.
