Auroville, a short drive north, brings long-staying visitors, volunteers and people exploring alternative ways of living, while the beaches along the East Coast Road add a relaxed seaside crowd.

Character over size

Guests here choose atmosphere. A restored heritage house, a courtyard, a rooftop or a cycle for the lanes often matters more than the number of bedrooms. The cooler months are the busiest, New Year and long weekends fill early, and the hottest stretch before the monsoon is noticeably quieter. Stays tend to be short for weekenders and far longer for Auroville visitors, so a mix of nightly and monthly pricing can make sense.

Rules to know

The Union Territory's Tourism Department notified guidelines for the approval and registration of the Puducherry Bed & Breakfast and Home Stay Establishment Scheme in November 2019. We have confirmed that the scheme exists, but we have not yet been able to verify its detailed conditions, such as whether the owner must live on site or how many rooms are allowed. Owners should check the current requirements directly with the Puducherry Tourism Department before listing a property.
