Our advice for Kannur
Kannur, in the far north of Kerala, is still less visited than the southern backwaters, and that is both its difficulty and its opportunity. The guests who come usually know exactly why they are here.
Three reasons people travel to Kannur
- Theyyam. The ritual performances in village shrines take place mainly in the dry months, and they attract photographers, researchers and culturally curious travellers who stay several nights and drive out before dawn or late in the evening.
- The coast. Muzhappilangad, where cars can drive along the sand, and Payyambalam beach within the town appeal to families and weekenders from nearby districts and from Karnataka.
- Family visits. The region has strong ties with the Gulf, and relatives returning for weddings or holidays need a house for a week or two. Kannur International Airport, open since 2018, makes those trips easier.
What to offer
A traditional house with a courtyard or a modern home near the beach can both work, provided the basics are right: good beds, clean bathrooms, air-conditioning in bedrooms, parking and a caretaker who can talk with guests. Theyyam visitors appreciate a host who can explain the local calendar, since performances are announced locally and shift from year to year. A short guide in English, prepared in advance, saves many phone calls.
Timing
The period after the monsoon and into spring is the natural season. From June to August the rains are heavy and beach demand drops sharply; that is the moment for repainting, checking laterite walls and treating woodwork.
Watch-outs
Theyyam performances are religious rituals, not shows. Brief guests on dress, photography and behaviour at the shrine; one careless visitor can damage your standing with the neighbourhood.
The Kerala homestay classification is reserved for homes where the owner and family live. Many Kannur houses belong to families working abroad; if yours stands empty between visits, confirm with the Department of Tourism and the local body which licence applies before hosting anyone, and complete the Form C declaration for every foreign national.
Our position: Kannur suits owners who accept a smaller, more specialised audience and who can offer genuine local knowledge alongside the room.
