Short-term rental in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand draws visitors for two reasons: the mountains and the sacred. Rishikesh combines yoga schools, river rafting and the Ganga ghats, attracting both spiritual travellers and adventure groups. Mussoorie and Nainital are old hill stations loved by families from Delhi and the plains, and Dehradun works as a gateway and a residential base with a growing weekend-home culture.

Patterns across the year

Summer is the busiest time in the hill stations, as families escape the heat of the north Indian plains. Rishikesh stays active through much of the year, with a strong autumn and spring. The monsoon brings road closures and landslide risk in places, so cancellations and honest communication with guests become part of the job. Winter brings snow seekers to higher areas and long-staying yoga students to Rishikesh.

Guests look for views, safe road access, parking, heating in winter and reliable water supply. Cottages, independent houses on hill slopes and apartments in Dehradun make up most of the supply.

Rules to know

Uttarakhand runs a state homestay registration scheme through the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. In January 2026 the Board tightened it: homestays are now reserved for permanent residents of Uttarakhand operating in their own homes, while owners from outside the state, or those who run their property through a caretaker, must register under the Bed & Breakfast scheme instead. Registration has to be renewed every five years.

For an owner who does not live in the property, the B&B route is the one to examine, and its conditions should be confirmed with the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board before listing.
