Our advice for Udaipur

Udaipur sells an image: lakes, palaces and sunsets over the Aravallis. Guests arrive with that picture in mind and judge a stay by how close it brings them to it. For an owner, the lake view is the single most valuable feature, and everything else — décor, service, access — should support it.

Around the lakes

The old city around Lake Pichola, with Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and the lanes near Jagdish Temple and the City Palace, is where many first-time visitors want to stay. Across the water, Hanuman Ghat and the Ambrai side offer the famous views back towards the palace. Fateh Sagar Lake and its neighbourhoods are calmer, more residential and well suited to families and longer stays, while areas towards the Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) hills provide space for villas.

A destination for celebrations

Udaipur is one of India's leading destination-wedding cities. Wedding guests often need overflow accommodation near the main venue, booked in blocks, with flexible check-in and space for outfits and make-up sessions. Couples on honeymoon and anniversary trips are another loyal segment. Treat both as a chance to offer thoughtful extras: early coffee on the terrace, a late checkout, a local contact for boat rides.

What we recommend

Things to watch

Lake levels depend on the monsoon: after a weak season the water can recede, and a "lake view" may look different from your photos, so update images when needed. The lake zones and the old city are areas where construction and renovation are closely controlled; take advice before adding a floor or altering a heritage façade. As elsewhere in the state, the Rajasthan Homestay (Paying Guest House) Scheme 2026 sets the framework for registration, so check its conditions and your building's rules first.

Seasons

Autumn and winter are the strongest months; the monsoon has its own following as the city turns green and the lakes fill.
