Alappuzha, or Alleppey, is the gateway to the backwaters: a network of canals, lakes and rice fields around Vembanad Lake, famous for houseboats and village life by the water. The town also has a beach and a lively centre, and the Nehru Trophy snake-boat race each August draws crowds.

Land-based stays have their own market

Houseboats dominate the image, but many visitors want to spend one night on the water and the rest on land. Lakeside villas, heritage homes in town and simple homestays in villages such as the Kuttanad countryside, Kainakary or Mararikulam near the beach all find guests. Families on Kerala circuits, foreign travellers and couples make up most of the demand.

Setting up by the water

• A canoe or a partnership with a boat operator for short cruises.
• Protection against humidity: ventilated wardrobes, regular airing, anti-fungal treatment.

Low-lying Kuttanad lies partly below sea level and is exposed to flooding during strong monsoons. Buyers should study flood history before purchasing. Owners should keep an evacuation plan, insurance and a clear message for guests during alerts.

Local culture as the product

Guests appreciate village walks, toddy-shop visits, cooking classes and traditional meals on banana leaves. Working with neighbours rather than around them improves both reviews and relations.

Houseboats follow their own licensing and safety regime, separate from land-based homes. For a house or villa, Kerala's tourism department offers a homestay classification.
