Our advice for Mararikulam

Mararikulam, known to travellers as Marari, is a long beach and a belt of coconut groves north of Alappuzha. It built its reputation on low-rise villas and quiet: no promenade, no nightlife, and a fishing village that still fishes. Owners here sell calm, and the market pays for it.

Space is what guests are buying

A villa with a garden, an outdoor shower and a veranda earns better here than extra bedrooms. Guests stay longer than the Kerala average, often a week, and they spend the day at the property rather than touring. That means the things that fail visibly, the pool, the water heater, the internet, matter every single day of the stay, and a caretaker couple living on site is the normal arrangement.

The backwaters are next door, not here

Monsoon is a season, not a closure

The rains bring the traditional Ayurveda season and travellers who come specifically for it. If you work with a treatment centre, be precise about what is medical and what is a massage, and never imply a health outcome in your listing. Rain also means damp bedding, mould and wet luggage; dry linen properly and keep a covered drying space.

Beach and safety

The sea here is not always calm and there are no lifeguards along most of it. Put the position in writing, and tell guests when and where it is reasonable to swim. Coastal building rules also apply close to the shoreline, so confirm the zone of your plot before any construction.

Registration

Ask Kerala Tourism which classification or registration applies to your villa or homestay, and check with the panchayat what your building is approved for. Do both before listing.

Rules in Kerala

Short-term letting rules are set by each state. Read the rules for Kerala, and the step-by-step registration guide, before listing.
