Our advice for Manali

Manali combines several markets in one valley: honeymoon couples, adventure travellers, families from the plains and a long-standing community of backpackers and digital nomads. Before deciding how to rent, decide which of these guests your property really serves.

Old Manali, Vashisht and the town

Old Manali, across the Manalsu stream, has guesthouses, cafés and a younger, often international crowd, including long-stay remote workers. Vashisht, known for its hot springs and temple, has a similar relaxed feel. Around Mall Road and the town centre, families and honeymooners want convenience and easy taxi access. Up the valley, towards Solang and the Atal Tunnel route, guests come for snow activities and views.

Snow sells, but it also complicates

Summer is the peak for families escaping the heat of the plains. Winter brings snow-seekers, especially around the year-end holidays, but also frozen pipes, road closures and power cuts. During the monsoon, landslides and flash floods on the Kullu–Manali highway have disrupted access in recent years, so a flexible cancellation strategy and proactive guest updates are essential.

Equipment that is not optional

• Real heating: heaters in every room, heated water and warm bedding for winter.
• Insulated or protected water pipes, and a plan for when they freeze.
• A power backup sized for heating essentials and the router.
• Parking or a clear drop-off arrangement, since many lanes in Old Manali are not accessible by car.
• Reliable broadband with a mobile fallback for workation guests.

The rule that decides everything in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh's Home Stay Rules 2025 set the framework for homestays. They apply to independent houses owned in the name of the owner; rented premises and flats are excluded. If your property is an apartment, or you do not hold the title yourself, it may simply not be eligible as a homestay. Check eligibility and registration with the Himachal tourism department before you invest in furnishing. Foreign guests must be reported through Form C (now called Form III).
