Our advice for Almora
Almora sits along a horseshoe-shaped ridge at roughly 1,640 metres, and it has never really behaved like a resort town. It is a working district headquarters and the old seat of the Chand kings, with a market, schools, offices and a cantonment. For an owner, that means guests who come for culture and calm rather than a mall-road scene.
Who books a stay here
Visitors fall into a few recognisable groups: families from Delhi NCR and the plains using Almora as a Kumaon base; writers and long-stay travellers drawn to Kasar Devi and Crank's Ridge north of town; pilgrims heading to Jageshwar or the sun temple at Katarmal; and people on a circuit that continues to Binsar, Kausani or Ranikhet. Delhi is some 365 km away. Most arrive by train at Kathgodam and finish by road, so the last leg sets the tone of the arrival.
Where property makes sense
In the town itself, older houses near the bazaar suit guests without a car but rarely offer parking. The Kasar Devi road and the villages beyond it are where independent cottages with valley or snow-peak views work best, provided the approach is drivable in every season. For stays of a week or more, a proper desk and dependable internet can matter more than an extra bedroom.
Operating realities
- Water: find out exactly how the house is supplied in the dry months; storage tanks and an arrangement with a local supplier avoid bad surprises.
- Roads: monsoon rain can bring slips on the hill roads from the plains, so build flexibility into cancellation terms between July and September.
- Cold: winter nights are sharp; heaters, quilts and hot water are expected, not optional.
Registration: check the category first
Almora became a municipal corporation in 2024. Under Uttarakhand's revised homestay scheme, as reported in 2026, the homestay category is meant for permanent residents of the state living in their own house, and is limited to rural areas and nagar panchayats. An owner based elsewhere, or letting a flat in town, should therefore expect to look at the Bed & Breakfast route. Registration goes through the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and, under the 2026 registration rules, is renewed every five years. The District Tourism Development Officer in Almora can confirm which category fits your case.
We take care of guest communication, check-ins and housekeeping standards, so a house on the ridge is run with the same care whether you live next door or in another country.
