Our advice for Chittorgarh

Chittorgarh is a fort town. Its citadel, spread over some 700 acres on a hill about 180 metres above the plain, is among the largest in India and, since 2013, part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. For most visitors it is a day stop between Udaipur and Kota or Bundi; the owner's task is to give them a reason to stay the night.

A stop that can become a stay

The fort alone deserves a full day: the Vijay Stambha, the nine-storey tower raised by Maharana Kumbha, the palace associated with Meera Bai, temples, reservoirs and gates. Evening light on the ramparts and an early start before the heat are the two best arguments for an overnight. A listing that sets out a two-day plan converts more browsers than one that only shows a bedroom.

Transport links

Udaipur is about two hours away by national highway, and Chittaurgarh Junction is an important Western Railway station with direct trains to Delhi, Mumbai and other cities. Many guests arrive with a hired car and driver, so parking and a simple rest area for the driver are practical pluses.

The properties that fit

Pilgrims and heritage travellers often prefer vegetarian breakfasts; offering one simply avoids misunderstandings.

Heat, water and staff

Like the rest of Mewar, Chittorgarh is very hot before the monsoon. Cooling, shaded outdoor seating and reliable water storage are essentials. Housekeeping and cooks are usually found locally, and a trained caretaker who can greet late arrivals makes a large difference in a town where many guests turn up after a day of sightseeing elsewhere.

Dates to plan around

The Jauhar Mela, a large Rajput commemoration held every year, fills the town while it lasts, as do winter holidays and long weekends. October to March remains the main season.

Registration

Rajasthan's Homestay (Paying Guest House) Scheme, 2026 lets an owner, lessee or caretaker operate a residential unit of up to eight rooms and 24 beds after registering with the Department of Tourism. Each rented room needs an attached bathroom, and foreign guests must be reported. We manage the register, guest checks and reporting on your behalf.

Rules in Rajasthan

Short-term letting rules are set by each state. Read the rules for Rajasthan, and the step-by-step registration guide, before listing.
