Our advice for Bundi
Bundi is the Rajasthan town people like to call a secret, even though Rudyard Kipling stayed at its Sukh Mahal and found inspiration there for parts of Kim. Blue-washed lanes, the Taragarh fort above, the murals of the Garh Palace and a remarkable number of stepwells give it a slower, more intimate feel than the big cities.
The guests Bundi attracts
Independent foreign travellers, photographers and artists form a loyal core. Indian families increasingly add Bundi to a trip that includes Kota, under an hour away, or Ranthambore and Chittorgarh. Guests often stay two or three nights and expect to walk: to Raniji ki Baori, built in 1699, to the palace, to the lakes. They value character and conversation more than a lobby.
The kind of house that works
Small havelis and old family homes in the lanes below the palace suit Bundi perfectly, especially with a rooftop facing the fort. Keep rooms simple and clean, respect the old walls, and invest where guests notice: mattresses, hot water, fans and air-conditioning, and good lighting on the stairs. Cars rarely reach the door in the old town, so describe the final walk and arrange help with luggage.
Practical realities
- Older buildings need wiring, plumbing and roof waterproofing checked before each monsoon.
- Haveli staircases are often steep; say so in the listing for older guests.
- Staff are usually local and part-time, so a written checklist for each changeover keeps standards steady.
- Summers are harsh; plan maintenance for May and June.
Seasons and festivals
From October to March the town is pleasant for walking. Bundi Utsav, a three-day festival held each year in the Hindu month of Kartik, brings folk music, crafts and traditional sports, and is a moment to fix minimum stays well in advance.
Before you open
The Rajasthan Homestay (Paying Guest House) Scheme, 2026 sets the framework: up to eight rooms and 24 beds, attached bathrooms, and operation by the owner, a lessee or a caretaker, with registration at the local tourism office. A guest register must be kept for seven years and foreign visitors reported. We handle this administration so a family home in Bundi can earn its keep without you living in it.
