Jodhpur is smaller and rougher than Jaipur or Udaipur, and that is exactly what many visitors come for. The Blue City below Mehrangarh Fort feels lived-in; guests want to wake up to indigo walls and the fort's cliff, then lose themselves in the markets around the Clock Tower. Hosting here means offering authenticity with dependable comfort.

Where to position a property

The old city — Navchokiya, Brahmpuri and the lanes near Ghanta Ghar, Sardar Market and the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell — carries the strongest travel appeal, especially for homes with a rooftop facing the fort. The drawback is access: narrow streets, steep stairs and little parking. For families, business visitors and anyone driving, residential areas such as Sardarpura, Ratanada and Paota are more practical, with easier roads to the airport and railway station. Umaid Bhawan Palace sits on the other side of town and is often combined with a visit to the fort.

Not only tourists

Jodhpur is also a regional hub. AIIMS Jodhpur and other hospitals bring patients and relatives from western Rajasthan; the handicrafts and furniture trade attracts buyers; and weddings fill the city in the cool season. The Rajasthan International Folk Festival at Mehrangarh, held around the October full moon, draws music lovers from abroad. Jodhpur is also the natural stop before Jaisalmer and the Thar, so one- or two-night stays are common.

How to prepare your home

• Heat is the defining factor. Summers are extreme; insulated roofs, efficient air-conditioning, curtains and inverter backup keep reviews positive.
• Water security. Storage tanks and a plan for supply interruptions are important in a desert city.
• Roof as living room. Evening seating with fort views is often what guests remember.
• Arrival instructions. For old-city homes, a map from the nearest car point avoids stressful first impressions.

Old buildings near the fort may also need structural and electrical checks, and any alteration in the heritage zone should be cleared with local authorities first.
