Our advice for Mount Abu

Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only hill station, a plateau in the Aravallis at about 1,220 metres in Sirohi district. For owners, that single fact shapes everything: while the plains bake from April to June, this is where families from Gujarat and Rajasthan drive up to escape the heat, so demand here runs to a different rhythm from Jaipur or Jaisalmer.

Who books a room here

Getting up the hill

Almost everyone arrives through Abu Road, the railway town at the foot of the hill, then climbs the ghat road by taxi or bus. Tell guests clearly how the climb works and where to leave the car: space around the lake is limited, and a home with its own parking stands out immediately.

Building and renovation: ask first

Mount Abu lies in a notified eco-sensitive zone. Under the 2009 notification, new construction, and even additions, alterations, repairs and renovations, need prior approval from a monitoring committee, while felling a tree needs separate permission. Before you buy a cottage to extend it, or plan to turn a garage into a guest room, get the approval route confirmed in writing. The wildlife sanctuary around the town also means sloth bears are sometimes seen near homes; covered bins and good outdoor lighting are sensible.

Running a hill home

Winter nights here are genuinely cold, so blankets and room heaters matter as much as fans do in May. The monsoon brings damp, which calls for ventilation and regular checks of linen, mattresses and woodwork. Install water storage and power backup before your first season, not after the first complaint.

Registration under the state scheme

Rajasthan's Homestay (Paying Guest House) Scheme, 2026 allows a home to be run by its owner, a lessee or an appointed caretaker, with up to eight rooms and 24 beds, each rented room having an attached bathroom. Registration goes through the local office of the Department of Tourism. We handle the guest register and the mandatory reporting of foreign visitors, and keep your calendar tuned to the plateau's summer and festive peaks.
