Our advice for Pushkar

Pushkar is small, sacred and unlike any other Rajasthan town. The lake, its ghats and the Brahma temple give it a pilgrim identity, while its cafés and rooftops have long attracted backpackers from abroad. An owner who wants to host here must respect both audiences at once.

A holy town first

Pushkar is traditionally vegetarian and alcohol is not part of local life around the lake. House rules should reflect this clearly, and your listing should say so up front: it avoids disappointed guests and keeps you on good terms with neighbours. Quiet hours near the ghats matter too, especially at dawn and during aarti.

The calendar that shapes demand

• Winter, October to March: the main season, with pleasant weather and a steady flow of domestic and international visitors.
• The Pushkar Fair (Kartik month, usually October or November): the camel and cattle fair and the pilgrimage around the full moon bring intense demand for a few days. Minimum stays and early confirmation are worth planning weeks ahead.
• Summer: very hot and quiet, a good window for repainting and repairs.

Guest profiles we see

Pilgrim families, often travelling from elsewhere in Rajasthan or Gujarat; foreign backpackers and long-stay travellers who base themselves here between Jaipur and Udaipur; couples on a weekend from Jaipur or Ajmer; and visitors combining Pushkar with the Ajmer Sharif dargah nearby.

Making a house work here

The lanes around the bazaar are narrow and busy, so parking can be the deciding factor for families arriving by car; a property slightly outside the centre with a safe place to park often wins them over. Rooftops are an asset, but they need shade and safe railings. Plan for heat with good fans or air conditioning, keep a water tank and purifier in order, and invest in stable Wi-Fi: long-stay foreigners check it first.

Before you register

Rajasthan offers homestay and paying-guest house schemes through its tourism department. Whether your property qualifies, and what documents are needed, should be confirmed with the department before you list. Foreign nationals must be reported via Form C (now called Form III), which we take care of at arrival.
