Our advice for Arambol

At the top of the coast

Arambol, locally Harmal, is the last large beach village before Goa's northern tip, in Pernem taluka. Beyond it lie Querim beach and the Tiracol fort at the Maharashtra border. Its landmarks are the freshwater Sweet Lake behind the rocks at the northern end, the cliffs used for paragliding and the informal sunset gatherings on the sand. Mopa airport is now the natural arrival point; Dabolim, far to the south, adds a long road transfer.

An international, alternative crowd

Arambol has for decades attracted travellers who stay a long time: Russian and European winter residents, musicians, yoga and dance students, and backpackers on a budget. Domestic tourism has grown strongly too, with groups of friends and couples coming for weekends from Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru. This mixture means demand for simple rooms and for well-equipped homes for monthly stays.

Where an owner can make a difference

Much of the accommodation near the beach is basic or seasonal, so a solid, clean, well-managed home stands out. We recommend:

Watch-outs specific to Arambol

Noise can be significant in season near the beach road and the cafés with live music; choose the location of a property with this in mind. The monsoon, from June to September, is heavy and the village largely closes, so plan for low activity and do the maintenance then. Coastal regulation applies close to the shore and the cliffs. Last, the formal side must not be neglected with such an international clientele: a home without the owner living there is registered with the Department of Tourism as a Bed & Breakfast before it operates, requires a designated agent or operator residing on the premises, and every foreign guest is reported on Form III (formerly Form C) within 24 hours.
