Our advice for Siolim
Siolim sits on the southern bank of the Chapora river, where North Goa's Bardez taluka meets Pernem. Its character comes from the water: mangroves, fishing canoes, riverside restaurants and old houses set back among coconut groves. The bridge across the river connects it quickly to Morjim and Ashwem, and the newer Mopa airport in Pernem is a practical drive away. Every June, Siolim is known across Goa for its lively São João celebrations, when young men jump into wells and streams wearing crowns of leaves and fruit.
Why guests choose the river over the sea
Siolim appeals to people who want Goa without the crowds. Its guests are often long-stay: remote workers settling in for a month, European and Indian couples spending the winter, artists and families who use the village as a base to explore both the northern beaches and the Pernem coast. Siolim is also popular with Indian professionals from Bengaluru and Mumbai who have relocated partly to Goa and rent before they buy.
The property that fits Siolim
- A house with character: a restored Goan home or a villa with a garden, a verandah and, ideally, a pool, performs well because guests stay longer and live in the space.
- A work-ready setup: a separate desk area, strong internet with a backup, and an inverter that keeps the router and fans running during power cuts.
- Kitchen and laundry: monthly guests cook and wash; a proper kitchen and a washing machine are expected, not optional.
- Transport: parking for a car and scooters, and a list of reliable taxis for airport runs.
Things to anticipate
Riverside and low-lying properties must be checked carefully for the monsoon, from June to September: humidity, fungus, flooding of access roads and roof leaks are the usual issues. Mosquito screens and dehumidifiers are worth budgeting. Water supply in some wards relies on wells or tankers, so ask neighbours how the property coped in the last dry season. Finally, Siolim's quiet is its selling point, and neighbours protect it; a party-oriented listing would clash with the village and put your relationship with the community at risk. Registration with the Goa Department of Tourism applies here as everywhere in the state.
