Udhagamandalam, still called Ooty by everyone, sits high in the Nilgiris and has been a retreat from the heat of the plains since the colonial era. The toy train, the botanical gardens, the lake and the tea estates bring a steady flow of families, couples and school groups, especially when the plains are at their hottest.

Peaks and troughs

April and May, Christmas and the long weekends are crowded; the town can feel saturated and traffic slows to a crawl. Other months are quieter, and the monsoon brings mist and rain. A realistic plan combines high-season nightly pricing with a softer approach, perhaps weekly stays, for the rest of the year.

Location within the Nilgiris

A cottage in the town centre is convenient but noisy in peak season. Properties towards Fernhill, Lovedale or on the road to Coonoor offer calm, views and space, at the cost of longer drives. Guests arriving from Coimbatore or Mysuru appreciate clear directions and a note on ghat road driving.

Making a hill cottage comfortable

• Heating and hot water. Nights are cold, even in summer. Heaters, thick blankets and a geyser that really works are essential.
• Damp control. Wooden floors and wardrobes need ventilation and regular checks.
• Parking. Many roads are narrow and steep; a guaranteed space is a real selling point.
• Food. A cook for breakfast and dinner is appreciated, as eating out in the evening can mean a cold walk.
• Entertainment for rainy days. Books, board games, a television.

Environmental and local rules

The Nilgiris is ecologically sensitive, and construction and commercial use are subject to specific restrictions. Before converting or extending a property, check the approvals with the local body. Tamil Nadu's tourism department also manages frameworks for homestays; ask them which one fits your cottage. Plastic restrictions in the district are strict, so equip the kitchen accordingly and inform guests.
