Our advice for Kotagiri
Kotagiri is a quieter alternative to Ooty and Coonoor. It sits on the eastern side of the Nilgiris plateau, surrounded by tea gardens, and has one of the coolest climates in south India. Guests who choose it usually want exactly that: fewer crowds, more walking and a house with a fireplace.
Who comes
Families and couples from Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore and Kerala, often driving up from Mettupalayam and staying for several nights. Retirees and remote workers look for monthly stays in the drier months, and groups of friends book whole cottages for long weekends. Visitors explore Catherine Falls, the Longwood Shola forest and the viewpoints over the plains.
The right house
- A cottage or bungalow with a garden and a view over the estates.
- Heating that actually works: a fireplace with a stock of dry wood, heaters in bedrooms, thick blankets.
- Hot water at any hour, and a kitchen, since restaurants are fewer than in Ooty.
- Parking on a slope that a city driver can manage.
- Internet tested in every room, because coverage in some areas is patchy.
Rhythm of the year
The hot months on the plains, from spring into early summer, form the main season. Year-end holidays add a second peak. The monsoon brings mist, rain and long quiet spells; houses need attention to damp, leaking roofs and fungus on wooden panelling.
Cautions
Wildlife is present around the town: gaur and other animals cross gardens and roads. Brief guests on keeping their distance, not walking on forest edges at night, and never leaving food outdoors.
The Nilgiris is an ecologically sensitive district, and construction and changes of use are closely regulated. Check approvals before extending a cottage.
Tamil Nadu's 2022 guidelines require every homestay and B&B to be registered with the Department of Tourism. Homestays are for owners living on site, with up to three rooms; B&Bs, with up to six rooms, may be operated by an agent authorised by the owner. If you live in Chennai or abroad, discuss the B&B route with the department.
Our view: Kotagiri rewards warm, comfortable, well-maintained houses that let guests slow down.
