Our advice for Gangtok

Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is a clean, orderly mountain town that serves as the base for visits to Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, monasteries such as Rumtek and the north of the state. Visitors appreciate its pedestrian MG Marg, its views of Kanchenjunga and a calmer atmosphere than many hill stations.

The visitor flow

Most guests are Indian families and groups on circuits combining Darjeeling, Gangtok and North Sikkim, plus honeymooners and a smaller number of foreign travellers. Stays are often two to four nights, with early departures for excursions. That makes breakfast timing and reliable taxi arrangements important parts of the service.

Permits: inform guests early

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim, and several areas require additional permits, including for Indian visitors. As a host, you are not responsible for issuing them, but guests value a clear reminder and a trusted local travel agent's contact.

Preparing a home in the hills

• Heating and warm bedding, as nights are cold for much of the year.
• Water storage and filters; supply can be irregular.
• Power backup for monsoon storms.
• Clear instructions on steep access and stairs.
• Space to dry wet clothes and shoes after excursions.

A state with a strong homestay policy

Sikkim promotes community-based tourism and homestays, particularly in villages, and the state's rules on tourist accommodation deserve close attention. Registration with the Sikkim tourism department is expected for accommodation businesses; conditions and categories should be confirmed directly with the department. Land ownership in Sikkim is also subject to specific protections, so outside investors must take legal advice before any purchase or lease.

Monsoon and road access

Heavy rain can cut the road to the plains for days. Maintain a flexible cancellation policy, keep guests informed and stock essentials in case of isolation.

Our view: in Gangtok, respect for local rules and a smooth excursion service matter more than the size of the property. Owners who build ties with local operators serve guests better and gain from their recommendations.
