Our advice for McLeod Ganj
McLeod Ganj sits above Dharamshala at a little over 2,000 metres and has been home to the Dalai Lama since 1960. The Tsuglagkhang complex, Namgyal Monastery, the Tibet Museum and the offices of the Tibetan administration in exile give it an identity no other Himachal town shares, and they draw a visitor mix that is unusually international.
What moves the booking curve
Beyond the usual summer and autumn seasons, demand here reacts to events. Public teachings at the main temple, Tibetan festivals and conferences can fill every room in the upper town for a few days, while a cancelled programme empties it just as fast. Watch the published teaching calendar and adjust minimum stays and rates accordingly.
Street by street
- Temple Road and Jogiwara Road are convenient on foot but noisy and awkward to reach by car.
- Bhagsu, with its Shiva temple and waterfall, attracts a younger, café-minded crowd.
- Dharamkot, higher up, suits meditation students and long-stay remote workers who accept a walk to the road.
Since 2022 a ropeway of about 1.8 km has linked Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, which helps guests arriving without a car.
The lesson of July 2021
On 12 July 2021 a flash flood in the Bhagsu nallah swept away cars and damaged buildings. A geological study published afterwards pointed to construction that had narrowed the natural drainage channel. For a buyer the practical rule is simple: look at where rainwater goes before you look at the view, and avoid structures built into or across a stream bed.
Documents and foreign guests
Under Himachal Pradesh's Home Stay Rules 2025, only an independent house recorded in the owner's name can register; rented premises and flats are shut out. The limit is six rooms and twelve beds, with CCTV, fire extinguishers and a guest register required. Because a large share of guests here hold foreign passports, reporting each one through Form C is a daily routine, not a formality.
We look after multilingual guests, long stays and event peaks, and we keep your house clear of the risks the hillside itself creates.
Rules in Himachal Pradesh
