Our advice for Dharamshala

Dharamshala has a split personality that owners should use to their advantage. Lower Dharamshala is an administrative town and a gateway, while upper McLeod Ganj is the seat of the Tibetan community in exile, with monasteries, cafés and a steady flow of visitors from around the world.

Where the demand sits

• McLeod Ganj: spiritual travellers, students of Buddhism, foreign backpackers and visitors to the Tsuglagkhang complex. Streets are congested and parking is limited.
• Bhagsu and Dharamkot: a quieter, greener setting with yoga and meditation courses, cafés and long-stay travellers, many of them working remotely.
• Naddi: known for its views of the Dhauladhar range, attractive for couples and families.
• Lower Dharamshala: convenient for cricket fans visiting the HPCA stadium on match days, and for official or business visits.

Trekkers and slow travellers

The Triund trek and other routes in the Dhauladhar bring hikers who arrive tired and leave early, so luggage storage, flexible check-in times and a hot shower are valued. At the other end of the spectrum, meditation students and remote workers may stay for weeks and care about a quiet room, a desk and dependable internet.

Weather to plan around

Summer and autumn are the main seasons. Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in Himachal during the monsoon, with landslide risk on hill roads and damp that can damage furnishings; dehumidifiers, good ventilation and regular checks pay off. Winters are cold, with snow on the peaks and sometimes in the upper villages, so heating is indispensable.

Essentials for the house

A power backup, a secondary internet connection, heaters, hot water and a clear description of access by road or on foot. Many properties in Dharamkot can only be reached by footpath, and guests should know this before booking.

What the law requires

Under Himachal Pradesh's Home Stay Rules 2025, only independent houses in the owner's own name qualify; flats and rented buildings are excluded. Verify eligibility with the tourism department before committing. Foreign guests, numerous here, must be declared through Form C (now called Form III).
