Our advice for Colva
A beach town with a Goan heartbeat
Colva is the busiest beach of Salcete and the one most Goans from Margao know from childhood: the town is only a short drive from the Madgaon railway station and the markets of the south. Its landmark is the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, home of the Menino Jesus statue, whose feast, known as the Fama, draws large crowds in October. Dabolim airport is comfortably reachable by taxi; flights into Mopa, on the other hand, imply a long cross-state journey.
A domestic crowd first
Unlike the quieter villages to the south, Colva lives largely on Indian travellers: families from Karnataka and Maharashtra, groups of friends on long weekends, pilgrims attending the feast and relatives coming home for weddings or festivals. European winter visitors are present too, especially in the lanes behind the beach, but the rhythm of the place is set by domestic demand, which also keeps it active around Diwali and school holidays.
Choosing and preparing the right unit
Apartments in the residential complexes between the beach road and Margao are the most common stock, and they work well if they offer:
- two bedrooms or a sofa bed, since families rarely travel as a couple;
- a lift or ground-floor access for grandparents;
- a reserved parking slot, because the beach road becomes congested in season;
- power backup, an overhead tank and a water purifier;
- Wi-Fi strong enough for streaming in the evening.
Before the monsoon, which runs roughly from June to September, inspect window seals and terrace waterproofing, and plan maintenance for the quieter weeks.
What to keep an eye on
Noise varies a lot from one lane to the next: units near the beach entrance or the shacks can be lively late into the night, so we prefer streets set slightly back. During the Fama, access roads around the church are crowded; warn guests arriving that week. Finally, if you do not live in the property yourself, Goa's Bed & Breakfast category applies: you must register with the Department of Tourism before operating, and a designated agent or operator has to reside on the premises. Foreign nationals are reported on Form III, the former Form C, within 24 hours.
