Our advice for Tiruvannamalai

Tiruvannamalai is a temple town at the foot of the sacred Annamalai hill, home to the vast Arunachalesvara temple and to the ashram of Ramana Maharshi. It has two very different visitor populations, and a property should be designed for one of them.

Two markets in one town

Pilgrims arrive in large numbers for Girivalam, the barefoot walk around the hill on full-moon nights, and above all for Karthigai Deepam, in the Tamil month of Karthikai (November to December), when a great lamp is lit on the summit. They stay one or two nights, often in groups, and need to be near the temple or the circumambulation path.

Long-stay spiritual visitors, many from abroad, come for weeks or months to meditate and attend the ashrams. They look for a peaceful room or small house near Ramana Ashram, with a kitchen, a good bed, a fan or air-conditioner, a terrace facing the hill and a monthly price.

Weather

Tiruvannamalai follows the east-coast pattern: the northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, brings most of the rain, sometimes heavily. That overlaps with Karthigai Deepam, so plan for wet crowds, access problems and drainage.

Watch-outs

On full-moon nights and festival days, roads around the hill are closed or congested. Brief guests in advance and give realistic arrival times. Foreign long-stay guests must be reported through Form C like any other foreign visitor.

Tamil Nadu's 2022 guidelines require homestays and B&Bs to be registered. A homestay is for an owner living on the premises (three rooms at most). A B&B, up to six rooms, may be run by an agent authorised in writing by the owner. Owners who live in Chennai or abroad should look at the B&B route with the Department of Tourism.

Our view: choose your market, pilgrim or long-stay, and build the house entirely around it.
