Our advice for Karaikudi

Karaikudi is the main town of Chettinad, the region of Sivaganga district where merchant families built grand mansions between the mid-nineteenth century and the 1940s. Chettinad's village clusters appear on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, and the architecture, the Athangudi tiles and the cuisine are what bring visitors.

Who travels here

Heritage travellers, photographers, food lovers and foreign visitors on a Tamil Nadu circuit, often combining Madurai, Thanjavur and Karaikudi. Families of the Chettiar community return for weddings and temple festivals and sometimes need extra housing nearby. Film crews and architecture students add occasional demand.

Heritage houses: a special case

If you own or inherit a Chettinad house, it can be a remarkable product, but it needs careful handling:

More modest homes and apartments in Karaikudi town can serve families and business visitors who want practicality.

Season

The cooler months from late in the year to early spring are the comfortable period, and summer is very hot. Lying inland on the eastern side, the area receives most of its rain from the northeast monsoon, around October to December, so roofs and terraces should be checked before then.

Watch-outs

Old mansions are costly to maintain, and restoring them requires craftsmen familiar with lime plaster, teak and traditional tiles. Keep an annual budget and never promise guests what the building cannot deliver.

Tamil Nadu has made registration compulsory for homestays and bed-and-breakfast units since its 2022 guidelines. If you live in the house, the homestay category applies, with a ceiling of three rooms. If an agent runs it on your written authorisation, the B&B category applies, with up to six rooms. Large mansions with more rooms may fall into another category; ask the Department of Tourism.

Our view: in Chettinad, the building is the brand. Preserve it and let guests experience it properly.
