Our advice for Madurai

Madurai is a working temple city, and the rhythm of the Meenakshi temple sets the rhythm of its lettings. Pilgrims, wedding parties, hospital visitors and students account for most bookings; leisure travellers are a minority, and they follow the same festival calendar as everyone else.

Proximity is the product

Distance from the temple, in walking minutes, is the single strongest thing you can state in a listing. Guests are here to attend the first ritual of the morning or the last of the evening, and a property twenty minutes away by traffic is a different product from one five minutes away on foot. Be precise, and explain where a vehicle can actually stop, because the streets around the temple are closed to traffic in places.

House rules that fit the guest

Many guests are observant: they will want to leave before dawn, prefer vegetarian cooking, and may not want alcohol in the property. Make your position explicit in the listing rather than negotiating at check-in. Early departures also mean your caretaker's day starts at five, not at eight, and locking arrangements should allow it without waking the whole house.

Heat and the building

Summers here are severe. Cooling that works, shaded windows, water always available and a functioning inverter are not upgrades, they are the minimum for a bookable room in April and May. Old houses in the core have thick walls and poor ventilation; a single ceiling fan will not do.

Paperwork

Ask the Tamil Nadu tourism department which registration applies to your property, and confirm with the corporation what a lodging use requires in your street. Keep guest records complete: a pilgrim city is well policed and identity checks are routine.

Rules in Tamil Nadu

Short-term letting rules are set by each state. Read the rules for Tamil Nadu, and the step-by-step registration guide, before listing.
