Our advice for Rameswaram
Rameswaram is an island town at the eastern tip of Tamil Nadu, reached across the Pamban channel by road and rail. Almost every visitor comes for the Ramanathaswamy temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines and one of the four Char Dham sites, so the market is overwhelmingly made of pilgrims from every part of India.
How pilgrims stay
The typical visit is short and intense: arrival, a ritual dip at Agni Theertham by the sea, bathing at the wells inside the temple, prayers, perhaps a trip to Dhanushkodi, and departure. Families often travel in large groups that include elderly relatives, and many come from north India, so a Hindi-speaking contact makes a difference.
What makes a property bookable
- A short, flat walk to the temple and the sea, stated honestly.
- Space to dry wet clothes, since guests return soaked after the ritual baths.
- Plenty of hot water, sturdy bathrooms and non-slip floors.
- Room for groups: extra mattresses, several bathrooms and a common area.
- Vegetarian cooking and clear rules on alcohol, which most guests expect to be absent.
Weather and the sea
This is the east coast: the northeast monsoon, roughly October to December, brings the main rains, and the Bay of Bengal can produce cyclones; Dhanushkodi was devastated by one in 1964. Buildings need solid roofs, secure windows and an emergency plan, and guests should be warned promptly if road or rail links are suspended. Salt corrodes everything, so budget for repainting and replacing fittings often.
Registration
Tamil Nadu's 2022 guidelines make registration with the Department of Tourism compulsory for homestays and bed-and-breakfast units. A homestay requires the owner to live on site, with a limit of three rooms; a B&B, of up to six rooms, may be operated by an agent under the owner's written authorisation. For an owner living in Chennai, Delhi or abroad, the B&B category is usually the relevant one. Coastal zone rules may also restrict building near the shore.
Our recommendation: in Rameswaram, the essentials are location, water and group capacity, delivered reliably at every turnover.
