Our advice for Bhimashankar
Bhimashankar is first a place of pilgrimage. The temple in Khed taluka of Pune district is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of three in Maharashtra, and it sits high on the Sahyadri crest inside a protected forest known for the Indian giant squirrel. An owner here hosts devotees, trekkers and nature lovers, sometimes on the same weekend.
Reading the calendar
Demand is shaped by the religious year more than by school holidays. Mahashivratri brings very large crowds, and the monsoon months pull in both pilgrims and trekkers climbing up from the Konkan side. Outside those peaks, weekdays can be very quiet. Plan staff and supplies around the festival dates, and set a minimum stay for the busiest days so you are not turning the room over three times in a night.
What a pilgrim family expects
- Clean, simple rooms close to the temple road, with space for elderly relatives and ground-floor access.
- Vegetarian food, clearly stated, and early breakfast before the darshan queue.
- Honest information on parking, walking distances and waiting times on festival days.
Trekkers want less: a dry place for wet shoes, somewhere to charge phones, hot tea and an early checkout.
Living next to a sanctuary
The forest around the temple is a wildlife sanctuary, and land near protected areas often falls under an eco-sensitive zone with limits on construction and commercial activity. Before you build, extend or even add a kitchen block, ask the forest department and the revenue office what is allowed on your survey number. Keep waste out of the forest and ask guests to do the same.
Monsoon reality
Rain here is heavy, fog is thick and the ghat roads can be slow. Damp-proof walls, keep spare linen and plan for power cuts. Tell guests clearly when driving after dark is a bad idea.
Registration
For paid stays in Maharashtra, look at registration under the Shops and Establishments Act and at the MTDC Bed and Breakfast / homestay scheme, and confirm with the gram panchayat which licences your property needs.
Our view: respect the place's religious character, keep the offer simple and your reputation will travel by word of mouth among devotees.
Rules in Maharashtra
Short-term letting rules are set by each state. Read the rules for Maharashtra, and the step-by-step registration guide, before listing.
