Our advice for Kudremukh
Kudremukh is a peak and a national park in Chikkamagaluru district, where the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikkamagaluru meet in the Western Ghats. Its grassland-and-shola landscape draws trekkers above all. The trek is regulated: permits are booked online through the forest department, a forest guide is mandatory and there is no trekking late in the day. Most walkers sleep in the villages at the foot of the trail, such as Mullodi, or around the town of Kalasa.
Hosting trekkers
Trekkers arrive late, leave very early and come back tired and muddy. What they value is basic but essential:
- A dry room with enough beds for a group of friends, and a place to dry clothes.
- An early breakfast and a packed lunch ready before dawn.
- Help arranging the jeep ride to the trailhead, with prices agreed in advance.
- Clear instructions on permits: guests must book themselves on the official portal, and you should not promise slots.
Beyond the trek
Families and slower travellers also come for the coffee country, the temples at Horanadu and Kalasa, waterfalls and the drive through the ghats. A homestay with local Malnad cooking and a quiet garden appeals to them for two or three nights.
Protected land and old mining country
Mining ended in the area in 2006, and much of the land is now within or next to the national park. Construction and commercial use near the boundary are tightly controlled; confirm what is permitted with the forest and revenue departments before buying or extending. Leeches, heavy monsoon rain and landslides on ghat roads should be mentioned honestly to guests.
Registration under Karnataka rules
The 2025 homestay guidelines in Karnataka require registration with the Deputy Commissioner, and a homestay must be a residence where the owner or immediate family lives. They also expect CCTV at reception and a proper guest register. If you do not live on site, the homestay category is not for you; separate Bed and Breakfast guidelines apply, and you should clarify your route before taking bookings.
Our advice: in Kudremukh, reliability is the product. Be ready before dawn, know the forest rules and never oversell what the park allows.
