Our advice for Kufri
Kufri lies on the old Hindustan–Tibet road, now National Highway 5, a dozen or so kilometres beyond Shimla at an altitude of roughly 2,700 metres. Most of its visitors come for a few hours: pony rides to the viewpoints, the Himalayan Nature Park, the temple on Mahasu peak and, in winter, the chance to touch snow. Then they drive back to Shimla for the night.
Turning a day trip into a stay
That is the central problem for an owner here. You are not competing for attention on the ridge; you are persuading people to skip the drive back. The arguments that work are practical ones: no evening traffic on the highway, a quiet night above the town, first light on the snow peaks, a fire and a proper dinner. A cottage or a set of rooms slightly off the busy stretch, with parking, sells that better than a view alone.
Who stays overnight
- Families who want snow in December and January without the crowds of central Shimla.
- Couples on a Shimla circuit who add a night in Kufri or nearby Fagu.
- Small groups who would rather have a private house than a hotel corridor.
Snow, water and the highway
The same snowfall that brings visitors also blocks the road, strands cars and cuts power, sometimes for a day or more. Chains, fuel for the generator, insulated pipes and a caretaker who lives close by are part of the investment, not extras. Water can run short in dry spells, so storage tanks and a dependable tanker supplier are prudent. The Kalka–Shimla railway, part of UNESCO's Mountain Railways of India, brings some guests as far as Shimla, but the last stretch is always by road.
Eligibility before furnishing
Himachal's Home Stay Rules 2025 apply to independent houses registered in the owner's own name in the revenue records; leased properties and flats are excluded. A unit can have up to six rooms and twelve beds. Fees and the Silver, Gold or Diamond category depend on the room standard and on whether the house lies in a municipal, planning or panchayat area, which in Kufri's case is worth confirming with the local authority. Foreign guests are reported through Form C.
We run the house so that the evening your listing promises is the evening guests actually get, whatever the weather does to the highway.
