Short-term rentals in Wisconsin Dells and Lake Delton
In the Dells, a state tourist rooming house license, local room tax and, in Lake Delton, a village license set the frame for family vacation rentals.

Wisconsin Dells calls itself the waterpark capital of the world, and the name is earned: indoor and outdoor waterparks, the river gorges and boat tours, Mount Olympus, Noah's Ark and a strip of family attractions keep families coming, with the summer holidays as the obvious peak and indoor parks supporting winter weekends. The market spans the city of Wisconsin Dells and the neighboring village of Lake Delton, with condos in resort complexes, cabins in the woods and larger homes sized for multi-family groups.
The rules that apply
Wisconsin's § 66.1014 protects rentals of seven consecutive days or more from local bans. A municipality may cap that type of rental at 180 days per 365-day period and may require a permit for properties rented more than ten nights a year. Stays of six nights or fewer have no such statutory protection and can be regulated by duly adopted zoning, which is where most local debate focuses.
Whatever the address, a home rented for less than a month is a tourist rooming house under state law and needs a state license, granted after a health and safety inspection. The state revised these lodging rules in January 2026. Lake Delton adds its own tourist rooming house chapter in the village code, so owners there face a village license on top of the state one. In the city, check zoning and any local licensing with city hall before listing.
Room tax and sales tax
The city of Wisconsin Dells charges a room tax on stays under 30 consecutive days, most of which funds the local visitor and convention bureau; reports are due on the 20th of each following month, with late fees and interest for delays. Lake Delton applies its own lodging rules, so confirm its tax filing too. Wisconsin sales tax applies too. Marketplace providers collect sales tax on their bookings and are also named among room tax collectors, but you remain responsible for direct bookings and your own filings.
What matters on the ground
- Resort condo associations often set their own rental rules and fees.
- Large-group homes need parking, noise rules and occupancy limits that match the license.
- Pools and hot tubs raise both the inspection bar and the insurance question.
Our advice
Families dominate here, so design for them: bunk rooms, a full kitchen, laundry, and easy access to the parks. Separate the paperwork by jurisdiction from day one, because city and village rules differ. We study every request and tell you honestly whether and how we can help.
