Vacation rentals in Ocala, Florida's horse country
Ocala's rentals serve the equestrian show calendar; rules are Florida's state license, Marion County's tourist tax, farm zoning and the covenants of planned communities.

AirDNA market averages (markets with at least 150 active listings), atlas updated September 2026, in US dollars. An average across all property sizes, not a promise. Rules status: our summary — read the text and the guide.
Ocala calls itself the Horse Capital of the World, and the equestrian economy is what sets this market apart. Horse farms and training centers across Marion County, the World Equestrian Center, open since 2021 and busy with shows much of the year, and the winter show circuit bring riders, grooms, owners and buyers who need homes with space, sometimes for weeks at a time. Add Silver Springs and Rainbow Springs state parks, the Ocala National Forest and a steady flow of retirees and visiting families, and demand is steadier than a mid-size city would suggest.
Rules for owners
Marion County and the City of Ocala are bound by Florida's s. 509.032(7): they cannot prohibit vacation rentals or regulate the duration or frequency of stays unless the rule dates from before June 1, 2011. What remains is the state framework plus local zoning:
- State license: a DBPR vacation rental license when a home or condo is rented more than three times a year for stays under 30 days.
- Sales tax: registration with the Florida Department of Revenue, including the county surtax.
- Tourist tax: Marion County administers its own tourist development tax; register before the first guest.
- Zoning: farm properties and guest quarters on agricultural land raise questions about secondary dwellings and commercial use; check with the county's Growth Services before renting a barn apartment or a second house.
We did not identify a dedicated local short-term rental registration during our checks, but confirm before listing, since Florida counties add programs regularly.
Private rules
Much of the growth around Ocala is in large age-restricted and deed-restricted communities, whose covenants frequently exclude short rentals. Florida's HOA statute, since 2021, lets associations adopt limits on rentals under six months that bind all owners, so a home inside one of these communities is rarely a vacation rental candidate.
When demand peaks in Marion County
The calendar here does not follow the beach seasons. From January to March the HITS winter circuit at HITS Post Time Farm fills the area week after week, and the World Equestrian Center adds jumping, dressage, western and breed shows almost all year. The Florida Horse Park hosts eventing and trail competitions on top of that. Spring and summer belong to the springs: glass-bottom boats at Silver Springs, tubing on the Rainbow River at Dunnellon, and swimming at Juniper and Alexander Springs in the national forest. Weekday stays are supported by the I-75 corridor, about forty minutes from Gainesville and the University of Florida and roughly ninety minutes from Orlando.
What equestrian guests ask for
A show team rarely books like a tourist. Expect enquiries for four to twelve weeks, several bedrooms for riders and grooms, a laundry that can handle muddy kit, early check-in on show days and room to park a truck and a horse trailer. Owners near Northwest Highway 27, Southwest 80th Avenue and the farms toward Reddick are best placed. Stays of six months or less remain subject to Florida's transient rental taxes, so long seasonal bookings still need the tax set-up described above. A clear cancellation policy tied to show entries, and a cleaning plan between back-to-back teams, make the difference between a full season and a calendar with gaps.
Our view
The best Ocala rentals are designed for the equestrian guest: a furnished home near the show grounds, parking for trucks and trailers, flexible stays from a weekend to a full season, and pricing that follows the show calendar. Hurricane exposure is lower than on the coast, but summer storms and insurance still deserve a check. We study every request and tell you honestly whether and how we can help.
