NTAK, a number and daily data

Every private accommodation in Hungary must be notified to the local notary (jegyző) and registered in NTAK, the National Tourism Data Service, which receives guest data daily through approved software. The registration number has to appear on listings.

Budapest: frozen, and one district closed

By government decision, no new private or other accommodation could be registered in NTAK within Budapest between 1 January 2025 and 31 December 2026. On top of that freeze, District VI (Terézváros) set the permitted days for private accommodation to zero under its Decree 26/2024; the ban has applied since 1 January 2026 and was upheld by the Kúria, Hungary's supreme court, in 2025. Districts may set their own day limits, so the map inside the capital is not uniform, and others such as Józsefváros have been preparing stricter frameworks. What follows the freeze is still undecided: host associations have asked for a one-year extension and a district quota system.

Budapest in practice

Our only Hungarian city sits in the freeze category. Realistic options are limited to units already registered in NTAK before 2025, outside District VI, and even these depend on the rules of their district. The question deserves a fresh look once the regime for 2027 is published.

Taxes and levies

Private hosts can choose a flat per-room tax, which for Budapest and other high-tourism areas stands at HUF 150,000 per room per year. Add VAT where applicable, a 4% tourism development contribution on accommodation revenue and the local tourist tax, which varies from one district to another. Enforcement is joint: inspections involve the municipality, the police and the tax authority, and fines can reach several million forints.

Our view

An existing Budapest NTAK registration is valuable: protect it by staying fully compliant with daily reporting and district rules. If you do not hold one, do not buy on the assumption that a new registration will be possible in 2027. We study every request and tell you honestly whether and how we can help.

Frequently asked questions

Is Airbnb legal in Hungary?

Budapest froze new NTAK registrations until the end of 2026 and District VI bans private short lets outright; existing registrations are now the only realistic route.
